Whether you are a frequent flyer or a once a year holiday traveller, there are things you can do to make your flight more enjoyable! It is very stressful flying anywhere today due to terrorist fears, ridiculous rules about carry on products, and lengthly custom interrogations and line ups. When you finally enter the airplane door, you must try to leave the pre-flight stresses outside!...Take some deep breaths and start your day NOW!
DO NOT go to the bar first and guzzle down 4 double Scotch to mask your frustration, because you may not get to board your flight if the airline employees think you are intoxicated...Drunk passengers are not welcome anymore! Most problems that occur in-flight are due to alcohol! (Air Rage) Say hello to your flight attendants (a smile helps)...
Most airlines are short staffing their crews now to save a buck, so when entering the airplane, they do not have extra staff to make one person the priority for seat problems, first class upgrades, extra baggage etc...Many passengers take out their frustrations about delays on the crew, most of them think the crews receive overtime pay! Most airlines only pay their flight attendants for air time, when the plane pushes back from the gate until it opens its doors at the arrival city. (flight attendants can work a 14-hour day yet receive only seven hours' pay!...In other words if they are NOT airborne, they get half time only!)...How many of you out there would do that? And the toughest part of the job is boarding, which they don't get paid for! Bet you didn't know that??
Presents work well...My Mom always takes the crew a box of chocolates as a token of appreciation, and while it may seem like a bribe, who cares, it works! Don't blame the crew for late departures, broken toilets, or malfunctioning video equipment...Write upper management and ask for some compensation. Yelling at the F/A, is going to get you...WHERE??? Compassion for the crew may get you some added perks! (trust me, it works like a charm!) Flattery will get a passenger everywhere!
Crew is there for safety first...Medical issues pop up on a continual basis during flights now, and when the short staffed crew has to attend to these matters, there will be even less service...it could be YOU one day, so watch your karma and quit your bitchin...I have handed out bottles of complementary wine to passengers that have assisted me in the past. Changing seats for Family's that were split up, medical assistance, standing up for me with an irate passenger...
While you are sitting in your seat watching the crew in action, ask yourself if you could do this job?...The glamour is OVER ...Back in the day it was wonderful with 3 day layovers etc in a Resort or 5 star hotels!... now it is airport hotels with a minimum of 10-12 hours, especially for domestic flying...
DO NOT STAND IN THEIR GALLEY UNLESS INVITED...ESPECIALLY IT THEY ARE HAVING THEIR MEAL...here is a quote from a flight attendant I thought was funny ..."don't stand there right in front of us doing calisthenics over the jumpseat while we try to eat and not look at your ass." This is so true! Some people are practising Tai Chi in the back galley like it is a gym!
Flight Crew are NOT opposed to meeting/dating someone on board the airplane...If it is done discreetly, it is totally accepted!...If you have had 2 bottles of wine though, you may want to refrain...F/A's are sober remember! Respect the safety demonstration, watch it! I had one woman performing oral sex on the guy sitting next to her while I did the O2 demo right in front of her...No word of a lie! It was on a Vegas flight...gives a whole new meaning to what goes on the road...
Flight attendants like children, but do not tolerate brats! Your Little Johnny is not cute to everyone...a well behaved child will get you bonus points with the crew. Please and thankyou's are mandatory. Bratty kids usually mean disrespectful parents...No treats for you!
Please DO NOT EVER TOUCH YOUR CREW! Pokes on the back or the Ass, (which some countries do MORE than others) are never appropriate!...(unless you are George Clooney)...Seatbelt checks and baggage under the seat is Ministry of Transport rules, not the crews!...they don't do it for their health, they do it for yours...They are not checking out the size of your basket, so quit being so defensive!
Praise is a wonderful gesture at all times! It is nice when someone really separates us from looking like all the other F/A's! I had people give me shit because I forgot their drink 15 minutes ago, and it was my colleague Phil who weighs 200 lbs...No kidding! Flight attendants are human beings and are usually pretty good, unless provoked with a pointed finger in their face...no matter how stressful it was for you to get to the airport, walking on board angry will not make your flight better...A smile and respect will...Trust me on this, try it and prove me wrong...
